Eastern States Adventure: A Week of Discovery, Fun, and Learning

Over the course of seven unforgettable days, our students embarked on an educational journey across the Eastern States, filled with breathtaking views, hands-on learning, and memory-making moments. Here’s a recap of the highlights from each day of the trip:

Day 1 – Saturday, 21st June 2025: Touchdown in Sydney!

Good evening, families!

We’re excited to share that our Eastern States Trip is off to a fantastic start! Our flight departed on time, was smooth throughout, and even landed ahead of schedule. After collecting our bags, we met our friendly driver, Jeff, who gave us a short scenic tour of Sydney before dropping us at Sea Life.

There, students enjoyed exploring the incredible marine life — highlights included the touch pool, a penguin boat ride, and an up-close look at sharks and stingrays. Our next stop was the Sydney Tower Eye, where we took in breathtaking panoramic views of the city from above.

After a quick check-in at the hotel, we enjoyed a delicious and hearty dinner, followed by showers and bedtime routines. We ended the evening with a devotion before students settled in for a well-deserved rest.

It’s been a full and memorable day — spirits are high, and everyone is happy and healthy. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support as we look forward to another exciting day tomorrow!

Day 2 – Sunday: Iconic Sydney Sights

We’ve had a wonderful day exploring some of Sydney’s most iconic sights! Our morning began with a beautiful walk around The Rocks and Circular Quay, where students enjoyed stunning views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. We then made our way up the Pylon Lookout, taking in panoramic views of the city and learning about the bridge’s fascinating history at the museum.

After a relaxing lunch at Bradfield Park, we spent the afternoon at Taronga Zoo. The students were thrilled to see a variety of animals and enjoyed a walk across the harbour. To finish the day, we stopped at Mrs. Macquarie’s Point—an incredible lookout where we soaked in the last golden light of the day over Sydney’s skyline.

We wrapped up with a hearty dinner back at the hotel, followed by a quiet time of devotion and reflection before heading to bed. Spirits are high, and everyone is enjoying this special experience together!

Day 3 – Monday: Blue Mountains Wonders

Today began with a continental breakfast before we set off to Echo Point for a spectacular view of the iconic Three Sisters in the stunning Jamison Valley. With clear skies and breathtaking scenery, it was a perfect start to the day.

After enjoying our packed lunches, we ventured to Scenic World, where the adventure truly began! Students braved the world’s steepest passenger railway, explored the elevated boardwalk through the lush rainforest, and soared back up via the cableway. The highlight for many was the return journey on the Scenic Skyway, offering incredible views over the valley.

With the Blue Mountains explored, we made our way to our new accommodation at Bathurst Goldfields. After a hearty dinner, we gathered around the campfire for a lively “Colonial Music” program with Jason, who had everyone laughing, singing, and dancing with his stories and tunes.

After making phone calls home and taking warm showers, everyone is winding down to get ready for another fantastic day ahead!

Day 4 – Tuesday: Gold Rush History & Campfire Joy

After a wet start to the day, students donned their raincoats and embraced the adventure ahead. Our tour guide, Andrew, led us on a fascinating journey through the history of gold mining in the Bathurst region. We watched impressive steam engines in action, showing how gold was once separated from quartz, and enjoyed a live blacksmith demonstration where Andrew crafted a billy jar lifter.

Following a lunch break, we continued our program by stepping back in time to experience life during the gold rush. Students made and cooked delicious damper over an open fire, played colonial games, and even gave mud brick making a go!

In the afternoon, we boarded the bus and travelled to our accommodation in Canberra. After a hearty dinner and a quiet devotion, the students were excited to settle into their rooms—especially with the added bonus of shared lounge areas. Everyone is now tucked into bed, looking forward to the adventures that await us tomorrow.

Day 5 – Wednesday: Science, Art & Democracy in Canberra

We kicked off our day with a visit to the incredible Questacon – Canberra’s premier science museum. The students were thoroughly engaged as they explored interactive exhibits, with highlights including the earthquake simulator, lightning strike demonstration, the exhilarating free-fall slide, and countless hands-on science activities.

Next, we made our way to the National Gallery of Australia for a guided tour. Students were introduced to several significant and unique works of art, gaining insight into a variety of artistic styles and cultural stories. After enjoying a warm lunch, we embarked on a driving tour of the embassy district. Our driver, Jeff, impressed us all with his wealth of knowledge and interesting facts about the international presence in Canberra.

Our final stop for the day was Parliament House. We toured both the House of Representatives and the Senate, before participating in a mock parliamentary session, where students had the chance to turn a bill into a law.

After a full day of learning and exploration, the students enjoyed a hearty dinner, followed by devotion time. They then settled in for showers and a well-earned early night.

Throughout the day, the students remained highly engaged across a wide range of subjects, asking thoughtful and intelligent questions that reflected their curiosity and growing understanding. We’re continuing to thoroughly enjoy our time away together and are all looking forward to the exciting experiences planned for tomorrow.

Day 6 – Thursday: Snow, Sport & Stories

Today began with excitement as we set off to explore the National Museum of Australia. Our guided tour took us through key moments in the nation’s history and gave students a deeper appreciation of Australia’s rich and diverse past.

From there, the energy ramped up as we made our way to Corin Forest. The excitement was contagious as the first glimpses of snow appeared on the drive up the mountain—and by the time we reached the carpark, there were cheers all around! Students had an absolute blast engaging in snowball fights, rolling down the hill, building snowmen, and enjoying all the simple joys that come with a snowy afternoon. After so much fun, we were more than ready for a warm, hearty dinner back at our accommodation.

This evening we visited the Australian Institute of Sport, where we watched elite athletes training in sports such as ice hockey, volleyball, and basketball. We also toured a number of the world-class facilities and were inspired by the dedication and talent on display.

After a busy and memorable day, students are winding down with showers and phone calls home. We’re soaking up every moment of this incredible trip and looking forward to what tomorrow brings!

Day 7 – Friday: Reflection & Farewell

Today marked our final full day of sightseeing in Canberra, and it was packed with memorable experiences, learning, and adventure.

We began the day with a visit to the Australian War Memorial — a moving and powerful experience. Our guided tour led us through key exhibits and concluded at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, offering a moment of reflection and appreciation.

From there, we enjoyed a walking tour down Anzac Parade, where we explored several of the commemorative memorials and deepened our understanding of Australia’s military history.

After morning tea, we made our way to Old Parliament House, now home to the Museum of Australian Democracy. Students engaged in a hands-on session learning about the federal electoral process, even participating in a mock vote. A hot lunch in the beautiful gardens provided a perfect midday break.

In the afternoon, we explored the original House of Representatives and Senate chambers, learning about the history of Australian politics, traditional parliamentary dress, and how it has evolved over time.

Next, we visited the National Capital Exhibition, where students discovered how and why Canberra was chosen as Australia’s capital, and explored the vision behind its unique design.

We wrapped up the day with a trip to Mount Ainslie, enjoying breathtaking views of Canberra and reflecting on all we’ve seen and learned.

Back at our accommodation, we enjoyed a hearty dinner together before devotion and began packing our bags for the journey home. After such a full and rewarding day, we’re all hoping for a great night’s sleep before tomorrow’s travel.

Looking Back with Gratitude

As we prepare for the journey home, hearts are full and spirits high. We are grateful for the memories made, the learning experienced, and the bonds strengthened throughout this incredible trip.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support—it’s been a week we’ll never forget.

Acknowledgement of Government Support

Students from Southern Hills Christian College recently undertook an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $510 under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
