Year 10 – Kurrawang Service Trip

Year 10 Kurrawang Camp – Connection, Culture & Growth

As part of The Rite Journey program, our Year 10 students recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Kurrawang CAPS (Community Aboriginal Parent School) — a unique and deeply memorable experience that brought together personal growth, cultural learning, and community connection.

The Kurrawang camp is a key milestone in the Year 10 journey at Southern Hills Christian College. It builds on the foundations laid throughout The Rite Journey — a program designed to support students as they transition from childhood into young adulthood. Through meaningful challenges, reflection, and shared experiences, the program helps students explore their identity, values, and place in the world.

Experiences like these not only strengthen their emergency service skills but also foster independence, leadership, and a deeper understanding of community service—valuable traits that will benefit them well beyond their cadet years. Camps like this help young people step outside their comfort zones, discover their potential, and develop resilience in unfamiliar environments. The combination of structured training, meaningful service, and shared adventure empowers them to become responsible, motivated individuals with a heart for helping others. It’s more than just a camp—it’s a stepping stone toward becoming strong, community-minded adults.

Over the course of the Kurrawang trip, students were immersed in activities that encouraged both fun and learning. Highlights included cooking damper over the fire, creating vibrant artwork, flying drones, learning words in the local language, and a hilarious dress-up talent show held under the stars. 🎭🔥

One of the most powerful parts of the trip was the evening session — “The Game of Life.” This activity sparked deep reflection on the choices we make and the paths we follow, leading into a devotion on Psalm 1 shared by Mr Prinsloo. It was a moment of stillness, insight, and connection that brought the day to a meaningful close.

Throughout the camp, there were countless laughs, courageous conversations, and genuine connections formed — not only among our students, but with the broader Kurrawang community. The students quickly grew attached to the younger children at Kurrawang, forming bonds through shared games, creativity, and conversation. Saying goodbye at the end of the trip was truly emotional — a reflection of the deep impact the experience had on everyone involved.

It’s these kinds of experiences that stay with students for years to come, reminding them of the importance of gratitude, respect, and living with purpose.

💛 What a trip!
