In February of 2020 Jorja Charles, a student at Southern Hills Christian College, received some very exciting news. During a Floorball game which involved both the teams she plays for (Western Wolves and Redbacks), the coach for the Australian U19 woman’s Floorball team announced that Jorja had been called up to play for her country in the World Championships in Uppsala, Sweden.
Jorja's journey with Floorball began a couple of years ago when she arrived home from school talking about a game she was playing called “Floorball”. She was clearly hooked!
Her family looked for a Floorball club for her and she began playing with the Redbacks Junior Floorball Club at the beginning of 2018. Coach Bryce Van Uden has been very influential in teaching the game to Jorja who didn’t know how to hold her stick properly until he began to coach her.
Jorja attended the Junior Australian Floorball Open in Melbourne later that year with the Redbacks as their only girl in the team. She had a wonderful time and was scouted by the Australian U19 coach who was disappointed that she was too young to be selected at that time. Jorja then joined the Western Wolves Floorball Club women’s team for the 2018/2019 season and remains the youngest player in her team for this adult league. Jorja won the coaches award for her first season in the adult league.
Last year, Jorja attended the Northern Beaches Open in Sydney as a member of the U19 women’s team and the Northern Beaches development team. The 2019/2020 season is still being played and Jorja now plays in the Redbacks mixed Div. 3 team as well as the Western Wolves Women’s team.
Being selected to play for Australia has been Jorja’s dream and a goal which she is now going to full-fill in May of this year. Her family, floorball teams and school are tremendously proud of her.
Several fundraising initiatives are taking place to help Jorja get to Sweden. If you would like to know more, please contact the school.
