At Southern Hills Christian College our year nine and ten students participate in The Rite Journey program. This program is aimed at assisting our young adults during the tumultuous phase of transitioning from boys and girls to young men and women. Over the past eight years the school and parents have seen great value and benefits in including The Rite Journey as a large component of the year nine and ten curriculum.
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we were not able to run The Rite Journey Camp as an overnight camp as it is normally done. Instead a two-day excursion program was created to replace the camp.
This took place on Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of March 2022. On Tuesday students headed to Woodman Point Recreation Camp to participate in some adventure activities and in the evening we made our way to Woodman Point Playground and BBQ area to meet our parents for the Departure Ceremony. On Wednesday the students participated in High Ropes and Giant Swing at school and spent the afternoon doing community service in the local area for people in need.
Traditionally during our camp, we hold two ceremonies, the Calling and the Departure. In the Calling students are asked to reflect on their life so far and we ask them to write a letter of gratitude to their parents or carers for all they have done for them and we call them to begin their journey into adulthood.
At the Departure ceremony we challenge the students to put off their childlike ways and move into adulthood. We also ask the parents and carers to come and take part in this ceremony. As part of this ceremony we ask parents and carers to bring items from their child’s childhood and reminisce together. Parents/carers also prepare a gratitude letter to give to their child. These letters are then exchanged between the students and parents/carers.
Despite the challenges that the COVID-19 restrictions have brought on, this years Rite Journey Program was enjoyed by all. We thank everyone who was involved in making this program a huge success.
